SOP0012 – Cleaning Procedure – Sweeping

Procedure

  1. Assess the area
  2. Wearing gloves, pick up any large debris which may be lying around
  3. Using an indoor broom, place both hands on the handle
  4. Starting at the furthers corner of the area, brush the dust and debris on the floor surface to the center of the room forming a small pile of waste
  5. With a dust pan and broom, brush the pile of waste into the dust pan with the brush and dispose of the waste in the appropriate rubbish bag

If using vacuum cleaner, the hard floor may be vacuumed of the waste using the appropriate floor tool for the same effect. (See Vacuuming)

Dust control mop

(Used for sweeping large areas. Not suitable for wet areas or rough floor surfaces.)

  1. Ensure the dust fringe handle is correct height for use, allowing you to stand up straight while sweeping. The handle should be the approximate height to your own.
  2. Insert metal frame into the fringe and tie up with the cords or clips
  3. Dust mop are not lifted off the floor like a broom but glided flat along the floor
  4. Sweep floor in a continuous motion moving from one end of the room, turning around, and going back to where you started, in an up and down direction.
  5. Sweep all dirt to a collection point, lift the fringe head gently a few centimetres above the dirt collection, and shake the fringe to remove any excess dirt in the fringe. Continue sweeping in this manner until the whole area is completed.
  6. Clean the fringe to remove any excess dirt and dust with a hand broom or vacuum.

Scissor mop

  • Scissor mops are two dust mops configured in a scissor shape
  • Used for sweeping large, uncluttered areas in the same manner as a normal dust mop but can be widening to cover large areas.

Ensure you are aware of who is around you when using a scissor mop to prevent any accidents happening.
